In the last five years the field of AI has grown rapidly due to the success of large-scale deep learning models in a variety of applications such as speech recognition and image classification. Interestingly, algorithms and architectures in these models are often loosely inspired by natural forms of cognition such as convolutional architectures and experience replay; e.
Hassabis et al. Empirical data from cognitive psychology has also recently played an important role in measuring how current AI systems differ from humans and in identifying their failure modes e. The recent advancements in AI confirm the success of a multidisciplinary approach inspired by human cognition. However, the large body of literature supporting each field makes it more difficult for researchers to engage in multidisciplinary research without collaborating.
Yet, outside domain-specific subfields, there are few forums that enable researchers in AI to actually connect with people from the cognitive sciences and form such collaborations. Our workshop aims to inspire connections between AI and cognitive science across a broad set of topics, including perception, language, reinforcement learning, planning, human-robot interaction, animal cognition, child development, and reasoning.
The virtual workshop will consist of a mix of pre-recorded and live content: Invited, contributed, and spotlight talks will be pre-recorded and streamed on the day of the workshop at the times listed below.
Spotlights will be streamed twice once before each poster session. All pre-recorded content will also be made available and can be viewed asynchronously at a time of your choosing. There will be a live panel discussion with invited speakers and senior organizers from pm GMT. During the two virtual "poster" sessions, each paper will have its own dedicated live video chatroom. We encourage you to view the presentation associated with papers you find interesting, and then to join the corresponding chatroom to ask questions and engage in further discussion.

Given that this is the first time I submit to ICLR, and taking advantage from all the data available of OpenReview, I have decided to make some data visualizations. As expected, network, architecture, data, learning, … are in the most frequent words. Note that although I performed a rough pre-processing, removing words like itandbutetc. What about which are the most prolific organizations?
In order to make a histogram of the submissions per organization, we can use the affiliations field in each submission:. As it can be seen, google leads the top most prolific organizations, followed by the university of MontrealBerkeleyand Microsoft. I merged some domains like fb. Interestingly, the top is populated by a lot of companies, and in especial, new ones like openai surpass other well established organizations.
Quantity does not always mean quality, so for all the organizations we plot their paper count bubble size by mean review score. As it can be seen google has 9 submissions with an average score of 7. Note that the google domain may contain deep mind, google brain and google research submissions. In case of doubt, I would like to clarify that I am not vinculated to google.
Bubbles are clickablelinked to the respective openreview pages, and I added some jitter so that they are separated when zooming in. I encourage the reader to browse through the data to find the gems hidden in there. For a more explicit visualization I also include a top papers sorted first by average score and then by confidence score is the raw average, not ponderated. This unveils the top rated paper, which is Understanding deep learning requires rethinking generalization! In fact, the final results show that the hard 6.
Congratulations to those papers accepted with a 5 and a 5. It is also interesting to see that papers in the range have achieved to be oral.

Adapting the state-of-the-art SOTA methods to resource constrained environments such as developing countries, is challenging in practice. Recent breakthroughs in natural language processing NLPfor instance, rely on increasingly complex and large models e. Methods such as transfer learning will not fully solve the problem either due to bias in pre-training datasets that do not reflect real test cases in developing countries as well as the prohibitive cost of fine-tuning these large models.
This in turn, hinders the democratization of AI. At this workshop, we aim to fill the gap by bringing together researchers, experts, policy makers, and related stakeholders under the umbrella of practical ML for developing countries.
The workshop is geared towards fostering collaborations and soliciting submissions under the broader theme of practical aspects of implementing machine learning ML solutions for problems in developing countries.
We specifically encourage contributions that highlight challenges of learning under limited or low resource environments that are typical in developing countries.
We expect the workshop topic areas would attract a wide range of participants such as ML researchers, industry professionals, government stakeholders, policymakers, healthcare workers, social scientists, and educators. We believe the focus on practical solutions for developing countries coincides well with the historic first time a major machine learning conference is being held in Africa.
This will help attract a large pool of local talent that are directly affected by the problem this workshop addresses.
With most of the organizers of the workshop having previous experience in organizing diversity and inclusion workshops such as Black in AI and the Deep Learning Indaba, utmost effort has been made to attract a diverse gender, geography, background group of presenters and participants. David Sengeh.
